The Greeter Code of Conduct
Purpose
This code serves as the guiding principles all Greeters are required to follow.
It was drafted by Greeters
and approved by All inPlay.
Code
- Greeters are role models to other players and especially to newbies. As such... Greeters will always use respectful and appropriate language when on the tables on community mailing lists. And of course, Greeters will be patient and tolerant.
- Greeters will refrain from inappropriate conversation while at the tables.
Some examples of inappropriate conversation are:
* Talking about anything team related.
* Discussing newbies and how to help them.
* Telling the Greeter Leader about what other greeters are or are not doing.
* Asking the Greeter Leader about anything related to team matters or helping newbies.
Conversations like these should be conducted via msn messenger. When in doubt about the appropriateness of a topic of conversation use MSN to communicate with those individuals you wish to converse with.
- While Greeters are floating or participating in Meet & Greet's (M&G's) or any other greeter-related activity it is important that they be signed into msn messenger, and that their display name reflect their All inPlay nickname so other greeters can find each other.
- Because there are so many variables while playing at a table with newbies, greeters should always be observant and focused. Therefore playing more then one game at a time (when there are other players present at either of those games) is strongly discouraged during M&G's or if you are playing at one of the M&G tables. Also Greeters are encouraged to minimize outside distractions during M&G's or during float time especially if newbies are present.
- While working with a newbie at the M&G tables greeters should allow the newbie to lead the gameplay. Examples of this are:
a. Game speed- let the newby set the pace and always play at their speed.
b. Chatting- let the newby decide how much or little they wish to chat. If chat is an issue for a newbie greeters should continue playing patiently, and minimize chat whenever possible.
- Greeters should always identify themselves as Greeters and offer immediate assistance to newbies. It is inappropriate for Greeters to encourage newbies to leave the table and read the help documents as they may become discouraged and not return to the table again. It is ok to tell them that these documents exist and where to find them, and that reading them may be helpful, however the Greeters goal is to teach the newbie how to play the game and to answer any questions they may have.
- Greeters will actively work to build confidence and avoid depressing early impressions of the game. In other words, greeters will do their best to "play nice" with newbies. This involves "throwing" a few games, avoiding giving newbies draw 2's, avoiding aggressive play behavior, etc.
- Greeters will promote M&Gs to newbies so they know that these events exist and how to participate in them.
- Greeters will modify their profiles so newbies can learn that the Greeter is a Greeter! Greeters are also encouraged to put whatever contact information into their profile that they feel comfortable making public.
- There is a maximum of 2 greeters allowed to an M&G table at any time (other than the greeter team leader who needs to be able to float from table to table).
- Both during Meet and Greets and when greeters are "floating" on Meet and Greet tables, when multiple greeters are at a table, one will assume the "Host" role and the others the "support" role.
- Hosts are greeters who lead the conversation with the newbie(s). It is generally a bad idea to have multiple people all trying to give advice and answer questions at the same time, this just confuses the newbie. Hosts help by providing a single person for the newbie to talk to. Should the Host need specific help from other greeters at the table (those playing the "Support" role), the Host will directly ask for the help through msn messenger.
- Supporters are greeters who work to help the Host do their job. They do this by:
a. Helping slow down the game (if need be) by taking a long time to take their turns
b. Minimizing chat so the newbie is essentially only talking with the Host
c. If the Host asks for specific help (maybe they don't know an answer to a question or they are asking you to be social in a specific way), Supporters do their best to fulfill the request.
- Hosts are usually assigned by the Greeter Team Leader. If a situation arises where no Host has clearly been assigned, the greeter who has been at the table longest assumes the role of Host unless the Greeter team leader joins the table. At that point the host must defer to leadership directives if any are given. All greeters at a table who are NOT Hosts are in the Support role by default.
- Should there be a situation where a greeter has a concern and feels that the team leader should know; the greeter will DIRECTLY contact the team leader. Why you might ask... Asking others to "pass on the message" or involving others in a situation that does not directly involve them is hurtful to the team and the community.
